Summer is inching closer with every day. Is your AC unit on the brink of conking out?
If your air conditioner compressor has issues, you could be looking at a long, sweltering next few months.
Today, we're taking a look at five telltale signs that it's time to get yours looked at immediately.
Don't wait until it's 95 degrees and your system won't start. Jot these down today!
1. A Rattling Noise
A noisy AC unit is a sign that a breakdown could be looming.
Before it fails completely, the AC compressor component will begin to hard-start. This means it's trying to turn on, and struggling along the way.
When you fire up your unit, do you hear a rattling or a chattering noise? That's a sign that the compressor's electrical relay switch is on its way out.
When you're dealing with an issue that involves any electrical component, it's always best to hire an HVAC repair technician to reduce your risk of injury.
2. A Consistent Click
Similar to the rattling, you may also notice a clicking noise when you start your AC system.
What does this mean?
It's likely that the motor mounts for your home AC compressor are failing. When this happens, the (very important) motor that distributes the compressor's cool air becomes loose and shakes about within its sealed housing.
A loose motor can be a safety hazard, this is another job best left to the pros.
3. Puddles Around Your System
Do you notice wet areas or leaks around your AC unit? If so, this could mean that your air conditioning compressor is leaking refrigerant.
This is not only risky for your health, but also drains your system of the chemicals it requires to run. Left untreated, the exposed refrigerant can irritate your eyes and lead to nausea and headaches, among other symptoms.
4. Overheating
Does your AC unit feel overly warm to the touch?
Your system may be working harder than usual to deliver cool air to your home. This is another sign that your compressor needs a maintenance check.
5. Blowing Warm Air
Your AC system is supposed to deliver cool air when you need it the most. Therefore, you might be more than a little surprised (and upset) to find that it's not delivering the cold breeze you expected.
If you crank it up and you're still noticing lukewarm air, it's time to hire a technician to give your HVAC compressor a second look.
